Anne Harwood

Anne Sanford Harwood, 86, died Sunday January 3, 2021 at her residence at the Auberge Memory Care Community in Bee Cave, Texas. She was born on May 1, 1934 in San Antonio to Henry Jackson Sanford and Blanche Bell Sanford of Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico. She married Wallace Baker Harwood, Jr. of Brownsville, Texas on Oct. 20, 1956.

Anne grew up with many friends and cousins in Nueva Rosita and Eagle Pass, Texas, riding horses on many ranches in northeastern Coahuila. She attended the American School in Nueva Rosita, often as the only person in her grade.

Anne attended high school at St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio, and then went to Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia. She was able to continue riding at both St. Mary's Hall and Hollins.

In 1956, she earned a degree in Spanish from the University of Texas Austin, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She later earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, both in Education, Curriculum & Instruction.

Through the 1960's, Anne taught fourth grade at St. Andrew's School in Austin and the Migrant School in San Benito, TX. She taught English as a Second Language for many years at the English Language Institute at Texas A&M University. She also taught English and Spanish at Schreiner College in Kerrville, TX.

She later moved to the Houston Heights, where she enjoyed home restoration projects and gardening, and was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church for over 25 years.

Growing up in the arid, scrubby landscapes of Coahuila and South Texas inspired a life- long love of trees, and Anne nurtured them wherever she planted her own roots. Her grit, spirit of adventure, and independence made her an inspiring companion on any journey. She cherished her large extended family, and loved telling a good story, always with a twinkle in her eye and a mischievous laugh. She was a skilled photographer and a lover of classical music.

Anne was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years in 1984 and by her youngest son, David Roane Harwood (1969-1994).

She is survived by her sons Wallace Baker Harwood III (and wife, Ann Gelber Harwood) and Henry Sanford Harwood (and wife, Amy Newman), and five grandchildren, Wally, Elizabeth, Samantha, Katie, and Addie, all of Austin.

Burial will be Thursday January 7, 2021 at the family ranch in Center Point, Texas. A fuller celebration of her life will be scheduled post-covid. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or KMFA.org.

Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of the professionals at Kerrville Funeral Home. (830) 895-5111
