Douglas B. Smith born October 19, 1951 in Sandusky, Ohio to Albert E. Smith and E. Margaret Burggraf Smith of Sandusky, Ohio.

Doug graduated high school in Mesa, Arizona in 1970. He then went on to continue his education at which time he decided to serve his country and joined the United States Air Force. Doug served 23 years. While in the service, Doug obtained his Bachelor's degree and eventually his Master’s degree in Education through Troy University.

Upon being honorably discharged from the United States Air Force, Doug became a truck driver. Several years after starting his career, he met Cindy, his wife. Doug and Cindy were married in 1999 and lived in New Mexico for a few years before they decided to retire in Kerrville, Texas. Throughout his life, Doug loved to be outdoors. He was an avid shooter and hunter and loved to fish when he could. He also enjoyed leather crafts and woodworking.

Doug is survived by his wife of 23 years, Cindy, daughters Jamie Kernes and husband Thomas of Hickman, NE; and Heidi Patak and husband Craig of Lincoln, NE; son Spencer Smith of Thailand; stepdaughters Jennifer Reichenau and husband Aubrey of Kerrville, TX and Leslie Reid and husband Joe Kyle of Tuscola, TX; grandchildren Ian and Elena Kernes, McCartney and Carmen Patak, Jaleigh and Morgan Vollmar, Natalie and Quincy Reid, Jacob Brown and great grandchild Josie Vollmar.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10AM on Monday, March 21, 2022 at Kerrville Funeral Home with Rev. John Wheat officiating the service.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Doug Smith Memorial and addressed to 625 Walnut St., Hickman, NE 68372. The memorial will go to fund a scholarship in Doug’s name for trap shooters through the Norris Trap program at Norris High School, Firth, Nebraska. Doug was an advocate for the Norris trap program.
