Elton Spencer Root, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and faithful servant of the Lord, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, leaving a legacy of love, devotion, and unwavering faith. He shared 65 blessed years of marriage with his beloved wife, Darla Kay Dunn Root – a union rooted in God’s grace, strength, and steadfast love. Together, they raised three children – Tressa McGehee, Lisa Root, and Randy Root – instilling in them the values of faith, family, and loyalty. Elton’s love for his wife, children, and family were the cornerstone of his life, reflecting the heart of Christ in every action. Elton and Darla have numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom they love and cherish.
Born on July 16, 1936, Elton was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Root and Mabel Rose Spencer, and his brother, Sterry Root.
Elton is survived by his loving wife, Darla Kay Root; his children, Tressa McGehee, Lisa Root, and Randy Root; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Veleda Smith, Gail Dean, Duane Root, and Galen Root, of New York and Pennsylvania.
Known for his generous heart and servant’s spirit, Elton never turned away a child, a family member, or anyone in need. He could fix nearly anything – a talented carpenter whose hands built, repaired, and created – guided by a heart as big as his love for God and family. His life was a living testament to Jesus’ command to love and serve others selflessly.
He proudly served in the United States Air Force, completing his final assignment at Pyote Air Force Station in Pyote, Texas, where God brought him together with Darla.
A devoted Christian, Elton faithfully served in several Baptist churches over the years in roles including Deacon, Youth Director, Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher, and, on many occasions, a sermon leader. Through his ministry, teaching, and example, he lead countless adults and children to Christ, nurturing their faith and pointing them to the hope of eternal life. His ministry extended far beyond church walls, touching the hearts and souls of all who knew him.
Elton and Darla are faithful members of Victory Baptist Church in Kerrville, where they worship under the leadership of Pastor Cody Samford and loving family and friendship shared for so many years.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Veterans Administration, Peterson Specialty Care – Dr. Ryan Patrick and Kelli E. McCall, FNP, Victory Baptist Church Family, Peterson Hospice for their compassionate and prayerful care, faithful and loving caregiver and friend, Ruby Donaldson.
Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM, Friday, February 27, 2026 at Nichols Cemetery.
Elton will be remembered for his gentle spirit, servant’s heart, skilled hands, and unwavering faith in the Lord. Though he will be deeply missed, his life points to the promise of heaven, where his family and all who loved him will one day rejoice in the eternal presence of Christ.
Services with integrity, pride, and honor are under the direction of Kerrville Funeral Home.
