Obituary

Gary Lee Becher, 87, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2026, in Kerrville, Texas. Born on December 28, 1938, in Columbus, Nebraska, Gary lived a full and accomplished life marked by dedication to his family, career, and passions.

Gary served his country honorably as a Private E-l in the United States Army for three years and Army Reserves for three years. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career in public service. He held the position of Director of Public Works for the city of South Padre Island, Texas, and later for the city of LaGrange, Texas. His commitment to improving communities was evident throughout his career until his retirement in 2000.

A man of many talents and interests, Gary found joy in spending time in nature at his property in Leakey, Texas, in golfing and was an avid fan of Astros baseball. He also had a passion for restoring old homes, gardening, and woodworking—hobbies that reflected his creativity and love for craftsmanship. He always found happiness feeding and watching the wild birds everywhere he lived.

Gary was a devoted father and grandfather who cherished time spent with his family. He is survived by his daughters Amanda Becher Martin and Amber Becher; stepdaughters Iverna Downum and Virginia Tovar; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Joyce Ann Becher; second wife Iverna Ingabjorg Becher; parents Harry and Ruby Becher; brother Thomas Becher; and sister Nancy Kapels.

Gary's memory will live on through the lives he touched and the legacy he leaves behind. He was an adored father and grandfather and his presence will be deeply missed. May those who knew Gary find comfort in their happy memories of him.

A private family service will be held in Leakey, Texas to honor Gary's wishes that his ashes be laid with his wife Ivy's near the beautiful Frio River.

Services with integrity, pride, and honor are under the direction of Kerrville Funeral Home. (830) 895-5111
