James Gray


James A. Gray, age 90, of Kerrville, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002 at a San Antonio hospital. He was born in Spokane, Washington to Henry Martin Gray and Jennie Brandenberg Gray on April 27, 1912. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Kerrville Funeral Home Chapel with a family visitation on Wednesday, July 24, 2002 from 5 to 7 pm at Kerrville Funeral Home.Mr. Gray received his Masters degree from the University of Wyoming where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. On September 1, 1943 he married Johnne Ruth Martin in Plainview, Texas. James taught for many years at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas and in Texas AM University in College Station, Texas. James eventually went to work as an Extension Service Specialist for Texas AM University. For several years, he was a rancher in Lampasas County where he raised sheep and goats. He was widely acclaimed as an expert in his field and was recognized for this work by the USDA when they awarded him with the Service Award in 1960. Mr. Gray wrote articles on sheep and goats for the encyclopedias. In the Kerrville area, Mr. Gray was a respected judge in the sheep and goat competitions in the Kerrville area and was very active with the 4H. Mr. Gray had many interest in his life, among them was collecting stamps, western art, and coins. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and could not let a cross word puzzle go unworked. James was a very active member of Grace Bible Temple.He is survived by his wife, Johnne Gray of Kerrville son, James M. Gray and wife Joyce of Coppell, Texas daughters Virginia Nance and husband Tom of Pearland, Texas and Mary Kathryn Sheenan and husband Patrick of Austin, Texas, as well as three grand children and a host of friends.
