Obituary

Lester Hilmar Brandt, 96, peacefully entered Paradise on March 15, 2026, in Kerrville, Texas. He was born in his family home in Boerne, Texas, to Velma Elsworth and Eddie Edward Brandt on February 6, 1930, one of six children. Les’s early years were shaped by the charm and challenges of a small-town upbringing, attending a one-room schoolhouse and learning the values of resilience, independence, and determination.

Even as a young teenager, Les’s adventurous spirit could not be contained. At just 14 years old, he ran away from home, hitchhiking across the country to Arizona and eventually making his way to California. By the age of 16, driven by determination and a deep sense of duty, he lied about his age and enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps (later the United States Air Force) on September 13, 1946. Almost immediately, he was deployed to Japan. Though World War II had officially ended, it was still considered a time of war, marking the beginning of a military career that would span decades. He went on to serve honorably in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, earning the distinction of a three-war veteran, a testament to his courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to serving his country.

It was in 1950, while stationed in Washington, D.C., that fate brought Les to the love of his life, Beverly Jean Winters. Their connection was immediate and electric, and within a year, their whirlwind romance blossomed into marriage on June 14, 1951 in Hagerstown, Maryland. This union marked the start of a remarkable journey together, a journey filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Over the years Lester and Beverly welcomed five children into their lives and together they traversed the country following the call of Lester’s military career and embracing every adventure along the way. Even long after his retirement Lester’s spirit of exploration never waned; he was a man who could never sit still, always chasing the next horizon. In later years, as dementia clouded other memories, one truth remained ever clear in his heart: the day he met Beverly and the day they said, “I do”, a testament to a love that endured for seventy-three extraordinary years.

During his military career, Lester served as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician advancing to Senior Master Sergeant (SMSGT) where he exemplified dedication, skill, and leadership, and he particularly enjoyed working on P-47 aircraft. Yet serving in the military alone was not enough to support a family of seven, and he often worked two to three jobs to provide for those he loved. Lester’s work ethic was nothing short of admirable, a reflection of the last great generation, where “I love you” was measured in actions rather than words. He never met a stranger, always striking up conversations and connecting with anyone and everyone he encountered. He showed up for his family every day, ensuring that each member was cared for and supported even in his final days. Lester was a man of unwavering integrity, honest, loyal, and true to his word. Before dementia began to take hold, Lester’s mind was a steel trap, able to recall every date, story, and tiny detail with remarkable clarity. And yet, anyone who knew him well would also remember his spirited, ornery sense of humor, which could light up a room as easily as it could keep you on your toes.

Lester was preceded in death by his father, Eddie Edward Brandt; mother, Velma Elsworth; siblings, Oland Brandt, Ophelia Knowlton, Leona Moore, Evelyn Kubena, and Thelma Jean Harrison; son, Lester Brandt Jr.; and grandson, Chris Klingemann. He is survived by his children: Rebecca Kleibrink, Dean Brandt (Norma), Wayne Brandt (Brenda), and Teresa Klingemann (Doc); grandchildren: James, Stephanie, Scott, Travis, Valerie, Kristi, Greg, and Deanna; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Lester… Les… Dad… Pop… Papa, we love you from the bottom of our hearts. Your unwavering devotion, tireless care, and boundless love have shaped our lives in ways words can scarcely capture. Because of your steadfast guidance and unyielding commitment to family, we carry forward the legacy you created with pride, gratitude, and honor. Job well done, faithful servant. Your work here on Earth is complete, and you have more than earned your rest in paradise.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Peterson Hospice for the excellent care of Lester in his final days, as well as the staff at New Haven.

Per Lester’s wishes, there will not be a public service. A small military honors ceremony for family will be held at Fort Sam, April 2nd. Condolences may be sent to www.kerrvillefuneralhometx.com
