Colonel Robert E. Walker, age 93, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2024, in Kerrville, Texas. Colonel Walker was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 17, 1930. He was the first child born to John R. Walker and Frances J. Walker. Robert was raised in Mt. Lebanon (Pittsburgh), PA. Following graduation from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1948; he attended Edinboro State Teachers College and Penn State University where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. In November of 1952, he entered the Aviation Cadet Program at Harlingen Air Force Base, Texas. He completed flying training and was commissioned at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas in January of 1954. His assignments during his career included: England AFB, LA; Connelly AFB, TX; Naha AB, Okinawa; F.E. Warren AFB, WY; March AFB, CA; Norton AFB, CA; Minot AFB, ND; and his final assignment and retirement at March AFB, CA. His assignments included duty as an Instructor-Lead Navigator, Staff Officer, Squadron Commander, Chief of Maintenance, and Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics, 15th Air Force, Strategic Air Command. Robert retired from the Air Force with 29 years and 3 days of active service. His decorations include: the Legion of Merit; Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster; Air Force Commendation Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; and the Vietnam Service Medal. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Colonel Walker was employed by Systems & Logistics Corporation as Manager for Logistics Support for the Air Force Peacekeeper Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Program.
Colonel Walker had many outside interests. He was an Ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church. He had continued civic activity mentoring in the Ingram Elementary School for over 10 years. In addition, he taught and supervised the AARP Driver Safety Program for over 7 years in Kerrville, Texas, and served as a Deputy State Coordinator for Texas for the Driver Safety Program. Robert was also a member of the Military Officers Association of America; Air Force Association; American Legion; Association of Air Force Missileers and the Air Force Navigators/Observers Association.
In June of 1955, he married the love of his life; Louise Fisackerly of Alexandria, Louisiana. They were blessed with 2 children, Nancy Moore (Danny) and John Walker (Diane); 3 grandchildren, Cameron Walker, Sara Walker, and Lauren Walker.
Memorial services will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, October 25, 2024 at Trinity Baptist Church with Pastor John Wheat officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
