Shasta Tom, 100, of Leakey, passed away on April 30, 2026 at a care facility in Comfort.
Shasta was born April 7, 1926 to James and Bertha (Goodwin) Gillum in Burnet. She was the twelfth of thirteen children; and early on they moved throughout Texas sharecropping during the depression years. The family moved to Leakey when Shasta was around 8 years old and she stayed there the rest of her life.
Shasta married Carroll Tom November 22, 1944 at the Uvalde Courthouse. After marrying Carroll, they began farming and ranching lease property in Real, Uvalde and Edwards Counties. She was very active in her church, local organizations, March of Dimes, PTA, Cub Scouts, 4-H and FFA. Shasta continued farming and ranching even after Carroll died in 1989 and continued until her own health failed.
Shasta is preceded in death by her husband and son, Billy Bob Tom.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Phyllis Spurgin; son, Jimmy Tom; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at Leakey Floral Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Leakey EMS or Leakey Volunteer Fire Department.
