Suzanne S. McQuinn

Suzanne Smith McQuinn, of Kerrville, Texas, passed away at River Hills Health and Rehab on June 11, 2025, surrounded by family, at the age of 92.

She was born on July 26, 1933, in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Edward Allen Smith, Jr. and LaVera Waite Smith. Her family home was in Morrison, Illinois, where she was baptized in the Presbyterian Church. On November 12, 1958, she married Alan Parker McQuinn at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and soon after moved to Canada. They later divorced.

A 1955 graduate of Connecticut College for Women, Suzanne held various administrative positions at prestigious universities, including Harvard University in Boston, Dalhousie University’s College of Law in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the University of Saskatchewan Law College in Saskatoon. She returned to the United States in 1985, moving to Texas with her parents. There, she worked as the Church Secretary for St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Kerrville until her retirement in 2008.

Alongside her father, she was co-founder of EDAL Company in Halifax, an active team member of CASDC in both Halifax and Saskatoon, and a longtime member of the International Order of St. Luke the Physician and the Daughters of the King.

She loved horses and riding, and enjoyed swimming, tennis, golf, and sailing. She was an avid reader who loved writing and editing. (Sorry, Grandma—I’m sure you’d cringe and want to get out your red pen to edit this.)

Suzanne is survived by her two daughters, Marion Ellen Kenalty of Kerrville, and Sandra Lyn McQuinn (Burger) of Lake Jackson, Texas; and her three grandchildren: Ashlea Amanda Martin of Kerrville, Curtis John Kenalty of Corpus Christi, and Devon Glenn Burger of Medina.

Her memorial service will be held at Sunrise Baptist Church, 1200 Broadway, Kerrville, TX, on June 24, 2025, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. Interment will take place at a later date at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison, Illinois, where she will rest with her family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Petersen Hospice or Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a charity Suzanne supported faithfully for many years.

Services with integrity, pride, and honor are under the direction of Kerrville Funeral Home. (830) 895-5111
