Virginia Loretta Griffin Callaway 91, of Bandera TX passed from this life on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at a local hospital.

She was born on August 5, 1931 in Sycamore Township in Butler County, Kansas to parents Elmer Diller Griffin and Viola May Danby Griffin.  Virginia grew up with five brothers and four sisters.  She married Eugene Ray Callaway in El Dorado, Kansas on January 3, 1951 and together they had two sons, Michael Eugene Callaway and Patrick Lee Callaway. 

Virginia was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in McAllen, TX for over 50 years.  She was a choir member, ministered to the children and adults in numerous ways and made way too many friends to count.  She was an avid cook for the church, and was honored to have the church kitchen named “The Callaway Kitchen.”  She could cook for 5 or 500 people with no hesitation, was famous for her brisket, chocolate chip cookies, white sheet cake and wedding cakes she baked and decorated for many young couples.  In her early years she was a telephone operator, an excellent seamstress and quilt maker, an artist, and owned the Creative Workshop in McAllen for several years.  She loved to play games with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as game night at Calvary and with her friends in the neighborhood.  She assisted in the kitchen with the Valley Baptist Retreat Ministry in Mission, TX until she became ill in August 2022.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Viola Griffin; five brothers; three sisters and grandson Jay J. Callaway.

She is survived by her husband of 72 years Eugene Ray Callaway; sons, Michael Eugene Callaway and wife Lois Kathleen Callaway and Patrick Lee Callaway; grandchildren, Kat Callaway and partner, Shannon Goemann; Kristi Lea Rogers and husband Steven A. Rogers; Evelyn Callaway; Kevin Michael Callaway and wife Melissa Callaway and Daniel Callaway; great grandchildren Avery Lea Rogers and partner Casey Niblett; Ava Lea Callaway; Kacie Jae (Stevie) Rogers; Owen Wyatt Jay Callaway and Brady George Kevin Callaway.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30AM on March 11, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church in McAllen, TX.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Valley Baptist Retreat at 3700 E. Harrison Ave.  Harlingen, TX 78550.
