Benton
January 12, 1930 – February 9, 2026
Walter Ray Benton was born to William R. and Mennie (Whaley) Benton on January 12, 1930, in Wellington, TX. He passed from this life on February 9, 2026, in Kerrville at the age of 96.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 7 brothers; 2 sisters; and a son.
Survivors include 2 daughters; 1 son; 5 grandkids; 6 great-grandkids; and 1 great-great-grandson.
Ray was a faithfully dedicated Noble of the Mystic Shrine of San Antonio; a member of the Valley of San Antonio Orient of the Texas Scottish Rite and a proud member of the Knights of St. Andrew; a beloved brother and companion as a member of the Grand Royal Arch Masons, and a Royal and Select Master for many years; a member of the Grand Council of R. & S..M of Texas; a pilar Master Mason and Past Master in his home lodge of Kerrville Masonic Lodge #697 A.F. & A.M., where he received the coveted Golden Trowel Award in 1990, he also received his 50 Year Award in 2023; he held a Lifetime Class A Esoteric Certificate (1976-2018) and was a well sought after Masonic Educator for many can remember; served as Chaplain of the Kerrville Lodge along with many other officer positions throughout his tenure; he was also an active member of the Rising Star Ranger Lodge #429 in Center Point, Texas, along with being a member of The Grand Lodge of Texas.
Ray was a founding member of the Unity Church of the Hill Country. He was also a founding member of AA in the Kerrville and surrounding area, of which he remained active until his health prevented him from going, to which he continued to mentor those in need from his home when called upon.
He lived a long and fruitful life and was loved by the many people that he touched in one way or another. The beloved coffee and donut crew will miss him dearly, along with many others who knew, loved him, and cherished his unconditional friendship.
Memorial Services will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the Kerrville Funeral Home Chapel with Military Honors and Masonic Funeral Rites.
